DFP's First YA Title!
Something spooky for young readers and more!
Hello to all of you awesome readers. I hope every is doing well out there, and reading lots of awesome books.
Speaking of awesome books, we have some new titles coming out!
First up is Mortals: Heather Despair Book 1 by Leslie Edens. This is a YA Paranormal novel. DFP is publishing the updated fifth edition which comes out next week! You can order anywhere books are sold or direct from the DarkForestPress.com website starting on Tuesday, March 3rd.
"There are things in this junkyard"
Sam warned Heather. Then he disappeared.
Since then, she's been seeing ghosts.
Sam Despair had always heard the voices. Tortured by visions, he knew the future. He saw truths others could not.
Heather knew his predictions were accurate. Whatever things he saw in the junkyard, they were real.
She was starting to see them too.
Heather never cared about her family legacy. The Despairs were supposed to be these great spiritualists, but that was her older brother Sam's problem, not hers.
She only wanted out of her stepfather's creepy, lonely junkyard..
...to find Sam..
And to stop seeing weird apparitions and crackling with blue electricity.
If things could just go back to normal!
But a force from beyond has other ideas..
And to find Sam, she must make a dangerous choice.
One that will change her world forever.
Next up is Scatttered: A Dark Forest Press Zine issue #4 coming out on April 1st. With brand new stories from Sam Rebelein and Michael Allen Rose, a new poem by Erik Keevan, art from Wayne Curran and Leo Corbett, and a new review from Leslie Edens. Pre-orders will be up soon at DarkForestPress.com
Further in the future is Cairn: Voices from the Cold book 2 by Clay Vermulm, coming out this May. Pre-orders are already up right now! Place your order early! Pre Order! Check out the amazing cover by JT Paton.
When an adventurer does not return home, those left behind have only grief and ghosts left for solace. For Rachel, Roger, and Miranda, that is not enough. But their search for resolution will pit them against more than historic winter storms. On the high mountain peaks of Washington State, something older than the Glaciers lies in wait, ever-searching for its next victims.
“The Haunting of Hill House meets survival horror in Cairn, which can be succinctly described as the most sinister iteration of the popular mountaineering bumper sticker, The mountains are calling, and I must go. A gripping tale of grief and the struggle against powerlessness, Vermulm has crafted a villain as cold as the mountain he dwells on and a story that, once it gets its ice picks into you, does not let go.”
-Rae Wilde, author of I Can Fix Her
“Vermulm’s Cairn completely ruined hiking, mountains, and winter for me... in the best way possible.”
- N.J. Gallegos, author of The Fatal Mind.
Beyond that we have a handful of other projects in the works. There will of course be more issues of Scattered later in the year. Also, Portals: Heather Despair book 2 by Leslie Edens is forthcoming. And, I am working on editing stories for my own (J.W. Donley) collection which I plan to publish later this summer. Watch both Dark Forest Press and J.W. Donley social channels for updates on that progress.
And finally, I am working on a anthology project. The tentative working title is The Bellingham Fiction Showcase. Ken Meyer (a local author friend of mine) and I decided we wanted to put book together to show off Bellingham fiction talent. I wanted to show the world what we have up here. Not all of it will be the usual dark faire from DFP as it will contain everything from horrror, to fantasy, to historical fiction, to sci-fi, and more. It will be a fun read, and half of all profits will be donated to a local non-profit while the other half will be split between all contributors. At the moment we are mostly set on the Whatcom Land Trust as our non-profit of choice.
That’s everything we have going on at the current moment. We like to stay ultra busy, as you can see. Including the four issues of the zine, it looks like we will be publishing ten different titles this year, which blows my mind. And, I’m already working on planning out 2027.
If you like what you see and want to support everything that is Dark Forest Press, the best way to do that would be to buy our titles direct from DarkForestPress.com/shop. Other than that, leave reviews for our titles on the major sites like Amazon and Goodreads. Oh, and share our titles with others who would love our stuff.
